The Healing Fields: working with psychotherapy and nature to rebuild shattered lives (Frances Lincoln Limited, 2002, Sonja Linden, Jenny Grut) - published in association with The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture. This book describes pioneering work where nature is used as a medium for communication and healing in rebuilding the lives of those shattered by torture and organized violence.

Ecotheraphy

The Healing Earth: Nature’s Medicine for the Troubled Soul (NorthWood Press, 1994, Philip Sutton Chard) - Chard explores how developing a deeper bond with nature can help us find solutions to the problems that are troubling us. Includes many exercises that you can try.

Inspiration & Reflection

Earth Prayers From around the World: 365 Prayers, Poems, and Invocations for Honoring the Earth (HaperSanFrancisco, Elizabeth Roberts & Elias Amidon) - the title says it all. Roberts and Amidon have brought together a wonderful collection of verse for reflection, and for when you want to honour your connection with our home, the Earth.

The Man Who Planted Trees (Chelsea Green Publishing, Jean Giono) - this beautiful short story quietly shows the greatness of the human heart, while inspiring one with the sense of one’s own capabilities and the strength and resources of the human spirit. I found the animated video of the story, narrated by Christopher Plumber on this site.

Working for All

Creating A World That Works For All (Berret-Koehler Publishers Inc, Sharif Abdullah) - Abdullah argues that we live in a world that only works for the few. Through practising exclusivity, we have convinced ourselves that we are separate from one another. We need to create an inclusive society. Inclusivity recognises that our lives are all linked, and that it is only through changing our outlook, our consciousness, that we are can change our world. Through an inspiring narrative, Abdullah shows how we can move to a World that Works for All.

The Tao of Democracy (The Writers Collective, Tom Atlee) - a manual of tools and ideas to bring together our collective wisdom to help heal the world. To Co-create a better world that works for all.

The Transition Handbook: From Oil Dependency to Local Resilience (Green Books, Rob Hopkins) - the manual of the Transition movement written by its founder Rob Hopkins. The Transition movement offers a vision for moving towards a future of less oil dependency and smaller carbon footprint. It is a doorway through which we can walk, sharing and working together to co-create a better world. Full of practical advice based on Rob’s and the movement’s experience thus far.

Peak Oil

The Party’s Over (Clairview, Richard Heinberg) - published in 2003, this book is a wake up call to the impending decline in oil, the natural resource that has fuelled the abundance that has spread through the western world over the last century.

Powerdown (Clairview, Richard Heinberg) - a follow up to Heinberg’s “The Party’s Over”. In this book Heinberg explores the options that are open to us as we move to a post carbon world.

Peak Everything; Waking Ip to the Century of Decline (New Society Publishers, Richard Heinberg) - the abundance of the 20th Century won’t be without its consequences on a finite planet. In a collection of essays Heinberg explores the personal, psychological, and cultural challenges that we face as limits are reached. A copy of the Introduction can be found here.

The Open Road; The Global Journey of the Fourteenth Dalai Lama (Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., Pico Iyer) - I have not included this book because of my following of the Dalai Lama through being a Buddhist. Rather I have included it as in trying to explore who the Dalai Lama is, through looking at the many hats that he wears (spiritual teacher, political leader, global celebrity, ambassador of peace), Pico Iyer is asking us to look at how we see and experience the world. Highly recommended.
