Masonite I-beams - the main house frame

Maisonite

The frame of the main house was constructed out of Masonite I-beams. These can be several metres in length and are cut to the required size. They are very light in weight and use very little material in their construction, so their environmental footprint is small. By themselves they have very little strength, the A-frame roof joists initially were blown down and fell like dominoes following a strong wind. The roof was then put back up and held in place by lengths of 2x4, visable in the photograph, until the cladding was added. Once the outer and inner cladding was in place, the house held together strongly. Still on very windy days, the house could be felt to move!
