Water purification

DSCF0088

This photo shows the water purification system for the house. Situated in the basement of the house just off picture to the left is the 8 cubic metre water tank. The large brown pipe is bringing water from the roof to the storage tank.

In the bottom right hand corner of the photograph is a pump. When a tap is turned on in the house or a toilet is flushed, the change in pressure activates the pump and water is delivered to the tap - and at a good pressure as well. This water is pulled out of purified water in the black tank. This held purified water as the purification system cannot deal with the water demand from the pipe. Water has to be cleaned and held in the black tank ready for the pump starting up.

When the water level in the black tank got too low, the ultraviolet light in the long white tube was switched on. Once that was warmed up (a few seconds) the pump to draw water out of the main tank (orange - to the left of the purification system) started up, pulling water through the blue encased carbon filter and through the ultraviolet light into the black tank. The water filters and light were manufactured by Liff Water Filters. The regulation of the water level in the black tank happened automatically...and of course was powered by the wind and sun.
