Hawai’i’s Coral Reefs Protected by Insurance

Well, this I learnt (I prefer the full English to the shorthands, TIL, though they have their place in a quick text) today. Hawai’i’s coral reefs are protected from storm damage by an insurance policy.

Payouts are capped at $1 million per storm and $2 million total over the one-year policy term.

I have no idea what the costs are to help the reefs following a storm, but I felt heartened that it is possible and an insurance company is willing to back the protection of the reefs. They are already struggling with the increased presence of us humans.
